The Long Drive — The Original Spark

The actual spark for The Unfolding of Mark happened before I began seriously developing the story.

While driving home on a long drive, I had a strange thought:

«“What if people died and they were not aware of it?”»

I wasn't thinking about a The Sixth Sense-type story where someone is dead but doesn't realize they are a ghost.

The idea was stranger than that.

What if a person could die, and the version of that person that had just lived would actually end—but their experience would continue in another living timeline?

That thought opened the door to what would eventually become the foundational concept behind Mark.

Mark could die multiple times without knowing when it happened.

His continued experience could contain slightly different details.

Other people's memories of events could differ from Mark's.

Something that appears to be a fuzzy memory, an inconsistency, or a small difference could actually reflect a different version of reality.

The question therefore became more complicated than simply:

“Did Mark die?”

It became:

“Which version of Mark are we following?”

This eventually developed into the idea of version death—a version of Mark ends when his behavior no longer aligns with how others remember him.

At the time of that original thought, there was no Unfolding Series as such. There was simply the question.

One strange thought during a long drive would eventually become the foundation for a novel.

The novel would create questions about perspective, memory, continuity, and reality.

And those questions would eventually grow into something much larger.

July 3, 2026 — The Beginning

July 3, 2026, marks the day I first really began thinking about what I wanted Mark's story to present.

At this point, The Unfolding of Mark was not yet the foundation of a larger series. It was an idea I was actively trying to understand. I used ChatGPT as an interactive sounding board—a place where I could lay out thoughts, explore possibilities, ask questions, and see what ideas emerged through conversation.

During the first week of attempting to create The Unfolding of Mark, I took myself all the way back to one fundamental question:

What do humans need to settle an area?

The question pushed the development of Mark's story beyond Mark himself and toward the world in which his story would exist. Rather than beginning with only the immediate events of the novel, I began considering the basic elements that would be necessary for people to establish and sustain a community.

The interaction quickly revealed a problem.

ChatGPT would often move beyond being a sounding board and attempt to edit, polish, or otherwise reshape what I was writing. I repeatedly had to tell it not to do that. I wanted to develop my own ideas and my own writing. I wanted ChatGPT to help me examine the work without taking ownership of the creative process.

That distinction would eventually become the foundation for something much larger.

July 10, 2026 — The Creation of AROW

On July 10, 2026, I decided to put my writing on hold.

Rather than continuing to fight against the tendency of ChatGPT to edit and polish my work, I decided to create something that would define exactly how I wanted an LLM to interact with my writing.

That became the Author's Retain Ownership Workshop (AROW).

With the help of ChatGPT, I spent the next three weeks developing AROW. The goal was not to make ChatGPT a better editor. The goal was to reduce its role to what I actually wanted it to do.

AROW established a framework in which the author's creative ownership remains central. Its operating principles are straightforward: Preserve my creativity. Be yourself. Analyze only. The system directs analysis through defined Applied Analysis Roles (AARs), rather than allowing the LLM to default to editing, rewriting, or unsolicited creative intervention.

The underlying principle became:

Let the work demand it, not the other way around.

July 10–31, 2026 — Three Weeks of Development and Testing

For approximately three weeks, I worked continuously on AROW.

I did not simply build it and assume that it worked. I tested it with various LLMs to determine whether the framework could consistently produce the kind of interaction I was looking for.

The results were successful.

The testing demonstrated that AROW could restrict and guide an LLM toward retaining the author's originality and creativity rather than allowing the model to automatically take over the writing process.

The system was not intended to make an LLM passive. It was intended to make its participation deliberate.

There was, however, one limitation that became apparent through extended use: after long interactions, tools sometimes need to be reminded to continue operating under AROW. The framework therefore became something that had to be maintained during an extended creative conversation rather than something that could simply be established once and forgotten.

After July 31, 2026 — Returning to Mark

After the three-week development period, I returned to writing The Unfolding of Mark.

The difference was significant.

With AROW established, ChatGPT could function in the role I had originally wanted: an interactive sounding board and analytical partner rather than an editor attempting to reshape the work.

As I continued developing Mark's story, my thoughts began expanding beyond Mark himself.

Characters who had originally existed in relation to Mark began developing their own identities, relationships, experiences, and potential stories. The world surrounding Mark became increasingly important.

What began as The Unfolding of Mark therefore began to expand into something larger: a series-led world built around multiple characters and their own unfoldings.

The story was no longer only about Mark.

It had become the beginning of The Unfolding Series.

August 26–29, 2026 — The Website

From August 26 through August 29, 2026, I created the website theunfoldingseriesbynw.com.

I really didn't know how to code HTML, so I allowed ChatGPT to code the HTML files while I directed the vision of the website.

This became another example of the relationship I had been working toward with AI. I wasn't attempting to become the person writing every line of HTML. I was directing what I wanted the website to be, while using ChatGPT as the tool to execute that technical portion of the work.

By August 29, I felt that the website had reached the best stage to leave it in its live version.

Rather than continuing to work on the website indefinitely, I decided to leave it live and return my attention to what had started everything:

drafting The Unfolding of Mark.

The Significance of the Beginning

The history of The Unfolding Series therefore begins before the series formally became a series.

It begins with a question about death and awareness during a long drive.

That question became the conceptual spark for Mark.

On July 3, 2026, I began seriously thinking about what I wanted Mark's story to present. During that first week, I went all the way back to the fundamental question of what humans need to settle an area, beginning to think about the world around the story as much as the story itself.

The process also revealed a problem in the creative relationship with the LLM I was using. ChatGPT was useful as a sounding board, but it repeatedly attempted to edit and polish my writing. I repeatedly had to tell it not to do that.

That led to July 10, when I put the writing on hold and began creating AROW.

For three weeks, I worked on developing, refining, and testing a system designed to keep the LLM within the role I actually wanted it to perform.

AROW became the framework for protecting the author's role within that process.

When I returned to The Unfolding of Mark, the ideas continued to expand.

Mark's story began creating questions about perspective, memory, continuity, and reality. Those questions opened outward into the people around Mark and the world they inhabited.

The story was no longer only about Mark.

It had become the beginning of The Unfolding Series.

Then, from August 26–29, the series gained a home on the web.

I created theunfoldingseriesbynw.com, directing the vision while ChatGPT handled the HTML coding I did not know how to do. Once the website reached the stage I felt was right for its live version, I deliberately stopped working on it so I could return to drafting the story itself.

One strange thought during a long drive had become a novel.
The novel became a world.
The world gained a home.
And now the writing could continue to unfold.

All characters, places, events, and other elements of The Unfolding Series are purely fictional and are the original ideas of Nicholas Walker. Any similarity to actual persons, living or dead, or actual events is purely coincidental.
